DEMODRIVERS team members Andrés Mejía, Kate Dudgeon and PI Umberto Lombardo attended the 14th Internation Meeting on Phytolith Research held at the Institució Milà i Fontanals de Recerca en Humanitats, Spanish National Research Council (IMF-CSIC), from the 14th to the 19th of July 2025.
Kate presented methodological developments on scaling up phytolith extraction and slide mounting for large sample sets. Andrés presented the automated workflow he has developed to automatically identify and classify phytoliths using artificial intelligence. These approaches have been developed as part of the DEMODRIVERS project to enable us to identify early plant cultivation and domestication, and reconstruct change in land use and vegetation cover across the Llanos de Moxos region throughout the early to mid-Holocene.

Andrés Mejía shares his research on using AI for the automatic identification and classification of phytoliths.
